What is Aluminum Nitride

What is Aluminum Nitride?

Known for its high thermal conductivity and electrical insulating properties, aluminum nitride makes one of the best materials for making semiconductors. In the field of light emitter technology, it can also be used as a heat source.

Properties of Aluminum Nitride

Aluminum nitride , an inorganic mixture of nitrogen and Aluminum. It is part of the wurtzite crystal and has a spectrum of 6 eV at ambient temperature. This makes it suitable for use in the field of deep-UV optoelectronics. It is also utilized as an electronic circuit carrier semiconductors.

Aluminum Nitride, a very dense technical ceramic material that comes in thin and thick forms. It is manufactured using the carbothermal reduction method. This process is however, it can be costly, and an alternative process for preparation of powder that is less expensive has to be investigated. A variety of sintering aids were utilized to bring the mass of the material back to specifications.

Application of Aluminum Nitride

Aluminum nitride can be utilized to make optical material like nanotubes for chemical sensors. It can also be used substrate material in silicon processing. It is very resistant to oxidation, corrosion and molten metals. It is stable at elevated temperatures, even in an inert air.

Aluminum nitride is found in almost any metal. It is a gray to white powder. It's easily soluble when mixed with water as well as inorganic acids. But, it's unstable in a hydrogen atmosphere. It's also extremely flammable.

It is used for mobile phones, to form filtering of radio frequencies. It is also used in medical imaging and robotics. The piezoelectric properties of the material are utilized in bulk acoustic resonators.

There is a report that the bulk of current research is focused on development of semiconductor (GaN or AlGaN) -based LEDs that operate in the UV, where the wavelength of light is 250 nanometers. In May 2006 it was reported that a diode with inefficiency could emit light with about 210 nanometers in wavelength. A single crystal of aluminum nitride has an energy gap of 6.2eV that is determined by vacuum ultraviolet reflectance. Theoretically this allows certain lengths of 200 nanometers to travel through. However, when you implement it commercially, many issues need to be resolved. Aluminum nitride has been used in optoelectronics engineering, such as inductive layers for optical storage interfaces, electronic chips, substrates for chip drivers with high thermal conductivity, and military applications.

Extending epitaxially on AlN crystals is also employed in surface acoustic waves detectors because of the properties inherent to the AlN piezoelectric phenomenon. The detectors are mounted on the silicon wafer. There are only a handful of places that can successfully make these thin films.

Aluminum nitride has high resistance to temperature changes and high temperatures, with a low expansion coefficient and excellent thermal conductivity. They can be used as heat exchanger materials for structures that require high temperatures.

Utilizing the corrosion resistance of aluminum, iron, and other metals and alloys aluminum nitride clays can be used to make crucibles and casting molds that can be used for smelting Al, Cu, Ag Pb, and various other metals.
